What is NLP?

NLP Is the study, practice and experience of human excellence. It is the study of how we know what we know, and how we do what we do. In studying the structure of how humans think and experience the world, the NLP practitioner develops models of how these things work. From these models, the techniques for quickly and effectively changing thoughts, beliefs and behaviours that limit a person, have been developed.

Think of the complexity of the human brain. It can be considered the most sophisticated computer ever conceived of, yet it does not appear to come with any instruction manual. Perhaps this is why, changing how we do the simplest task, often meets with failure.

NLP has been designed to create the knowledge we need to learn how to operate our own minds. The very technical sounding name is only descriptive.

Neuro refers to our nervous system, the mental pathways of our five senses by which we see, hear, feel, taste and smell.

Linguistic refers to our ability to use language and how specific words or phrases mirror our mental worlds. We use language to understand our own world, telling ourselves things about it according to our upbringing and belief systems. Our experiences tend to follow the words we use. For example: if we tell ourselves often enough and for long enough, that we are clumsy, things will appear to fly out of our hands and we may stumble a lot. Interestingly, if we start saying to ourselves I used to be clumsy' then life seems to follow and change according to the words of our story, especially when these are positive in nature. Linguistic also refers to our body language, the silent language of postures, gestures and habits that reveal our thinking styles, beliefs and attitudes.

Programming is a term borrowed from computer science to suggest that our thoughts, feelings and actions are simply programmes which we run out of habit, that can be changed by upgrading our mental software. Through use of language and holding our body's posture, we create and change our personal experience of reality. So if our life experience is not progressing as well as we would like it to, this is a good time to realise that we have unlimited resources to change experiences to match our positive expectations.

How does it work?

Humans experiences can result in beliefs which are programmed into us. Our behaviour tends to be based on our earlier programming. If our programming has resulted, for example, in low self worth, we will act out in accordance with that program, however much we try to do otherwise.

Painful memories that result from previous negative experiences can lie buried deep in the unconscious mind. Such negative emotions from a previous experience can weigh us down.

Childhood experiences may have set up patterns of behaviour which are not appropriate for an adult, or which the adult does not wish to experience, for example, phobias and panic attacks.

Such negative emotions can rob us of energy that would otherwise be available for us to use more productively.

Through NLP and Time Line Therapy negative programming can be replaced by positive. Positive programming and belief in our ability enables us to create success for ourselves. Then we can achieve an empowered and successful life. Some people get very rapid change with the NLP while others need a number of consultations.

Many of the models in NLP were created as a result of studying people who did things extremely well. NLP can be used to build a model of how such people perform that ability. The pattern can then be copied so that others can learn the same capabilities far more rapidly than would be possible through the usual ways of learning.

Look at an example of someone taking this NLP approach, who wanted to create a model for learning to drive a car really well. They would model an expert driver - but not by concentrating on the content of what that driver did, but on the underlying structure, such as how they represent driving in their mind, the beliefs and attitudes they had about driving, the strategies they used in making decisions. By understanding how we perceive the world through our five senses, we can then understand how some people can respond very resourcefully in a situation and others do not. Once you learn how those who remain resourceful set up their representations of the world, then it is easier to teach others to do the same thing.

Flexibility is one of the key elements in NLP.. The person who is most likely to do well responds to changing circumstances. NLP is about what works, not what 'should' work. If what you're doing isn't working, you try something else, regardless of whether or not that something 'should' have worked.

The NLP approach respects the uniqueness of the individual. It does not claim one 'right' way of doing something. With NLP you can explore and add many choices to your life, your family and your community. You can choose the way you want to be in life, and the skills and abilities you want to develop.

NLP - Applied To A Specific Problem

Every problem has a boundary. It's as if you, the person with the problem, are surrounded by a prison wall, which you are unable to break out of. Sometimes, something good may happen and it's as if a small door opens in the boundary wall enabling you to get outside.

Then, perhaps you have to talk about the problem . Maybe someone trying to help you asks you questions and talking about the problem brings back the old emotions, until you feel much worse. It's as if an extra layer of bricks has been placed on top of your boundary wall.

NLP' s techniques are designed to break down the boundary, so that you can permanently step out free of all the emotional baggage. Used in conjunction with Time Line Therapy it enables you to let go of the feelings that prevent you from having what you choose in life.
